Driveshaft Vent Cap

Post by Canadian FJR »

Can this vent cap be removed (and reinstalled) without damaging anything.

If so, how to remove it?

Why would you want to remove it?

Other sandbox. Unfortunately no pics but apparently easy to break the cap off the part that goes into the drive so you would probably end out replacing it. Not expensive.

Thanks Ross

Cleaning up the ‘03 and the original one is a bit tarnished

Yes. The one on my '07 was a bit pitted and corroded but I never bothered to do anything with it.
Service manual doesn't say anything about removal or installation as far as I could see. I only remember the one post about someone replacing it.

You'll break it trying to get it out. Normally they're pressed in, cap will come off and never stay back on... whole new vent if you go down that road.

Not a big deal - they aren't especially expensive. Same one is used on a bunch of Yamaha shaft drives. They do seem to pit and corrode. Purely cosmetic, of course, but I was tempted to replace the one on my '07 when I found it couldn't be cleaned up. The one on my 2011 is starting to look like that...

Since it is a friction fit, I would probably throw the breather cap in the freezer for a half hour before tapping it into place.
