Dark Side Advice Needed

Post by NTXFJR »

So I decided to try a ct on the back for the Red Lodge run. I bought a 205/50-17ZR BFG. I went to put it on the bike tonight and there's a firm rub on the shaft side swing arm. I'm quite sure all the bushings and spacers are situated correctly. Any suggestions? TIA

I'm on car tire #3, never heard of it rubbing on the drive shaft side. Does your wheel have a collar on that side, the axle runs through it?

Sumting wong if rubbing on the left side, you do need a brake arm mod for the right side.... some CT's are fatter than others though... might be close but it shouldn't rub.

I just manually removed a car tire from my trailer wheel. I shudder to think of the fun I’ll have when FedEx delivers the replacement tire today.

Edited to add- trailer tire is done. I must be getting better at this.

OP- Waiting to see what’s up with the swing arm rub.

If you have everything installed correctly as you say...it could be as simple as the Dark Side rejecting you. Not everybody gets into the club.

Or, I'm with Ray. Sum Ting Wong.

I'll be making a new caliper arm with the proper offset clearance once I get the tire situated. I checked the bushing and spacers stack up and things look kosher. I went with that BFG model because others have used it successfully. Things that make one go hmmpf.

Gotta be something wrong. Car tire (205) shouldn't rub the swingarm on the shaft side; especially one that others have used without issues.

Brodie being the great guy he is came to the rescue and politely suggested the possible error of my ways. I was looking at the rear wheel parts diagram but the suspect missing spacer was in the driveshaft diagram, doh! This kind of shit only gets worse for me when I get in a hurry, dammit. Turns out a spacer fell out of the final drive that hasn't done that to me before. Item 32. Got dark too quick, the saga to be continued tomorrow night.

Glad you got that sorted out. I have been changing tires on FJRs once or twice a year since 2004 and last month when I was changing tires item #32 fell out for the first time. It must be Covid-19 related.

I had a chance to ride SkooterG's FJR with a car tire. Yuck. I could have ridden it for the afternoon but after a few turns I very carefully returned the bike to him while it was still intact. It's possible to get used to almost anything but this was a case of 'why' for me.

Hellya that'll do it... stop turning your pumpkin on it's side and it should stay in there... you woulda noticed the right side axle was drawing in too much and wheel would be hard to turn (iff'n ya'd stick to bike tires, idjit!). Yer going down in flames!! My ass was hot for 3 years of running a CT.
Now for a brake arm, calculate point at which tire may contact and go forward an inch and mark it, go rearward and mark another point... then machine half of the brake arm away, don't worry, that's not a problem with that x-section. Maybe make a cardboard template......
Easier and faster, get yerself some stainless or iron flat bar, say 1"-1.5" wide depending on what gauge you use, drill two holes in it, done! How about 1" x 1/4" thick.....
Didja read the darkside threads in the "other place"?

Ray, I'll take your word for it that you had a hot ass ;)

We have a shop at my work so I'm going to make a new one and keep my oem one stock. Brodie's photo shows a great view of the offset that worked for him, I plan to cut that into my new one.

Option if you want..... cut down your existing one..... you won't need the original even if you take the CT off... but, some Canadian dick has a spare one in his stash if ya talk nice one day.
