Stating the obvious, if we knew who manufactured Yamaha's electrical harness, we'd be in tall cotton. Here in Lafayette, we have an electronics store that is the Bee's Knees. I'd bring that terminal to the old man behind the counter, and with his 50 years of experience, he'd probably find it. Festus - do you have such a place where you live?

Interesting note. Viper Dad and I noticed the shifter rubber being tapered on Jolene and on his bike as well. We weren't sure if they were tapered from wear or made that way.

Today, we know....new one! (did you seriously think I'd wax the swingarm but not replace the rubber on the shifter?)

At this point, I don't worry too much about the engine side of it. I think I can get that back just fine. What I think about constantly is all the little stuff, like throttle linkages, etc. Cable routing, things like that. I have photos of it all, but that stuff keeps my mind way more occupied than putting the engine back together. Maybe it should be the other way around. I guess we'll know later. I'm sure I have forgotten to order some o-ring or gasket that's going to put the brakes on this at some stage, but a box full of gaskets and o-rings came in today so hopefully I have covered the important things.

I wonder if this would have been covered under YES?

Mine was still in warranty when it started and when I asked the dealer he said no, It is a wear item.

Fencer, I feel your pain. Living with this 2nd gear issue sucks...big time! My dealership said the same thing, and then quoted me $2,500-$4,000, depending what they found. The FJR isn't the only model to suffer this either, as the R1 & R6 have the same issue. It's no wonder Yamaha felt the need for a slipper clutch.

I think pushing hard against the dealership, and getting a regional Yamaha rep involved, would get better results. At least maybe pay for the labor.

Yamaha suffered the second gear issue back in 1984-85 with the FJ-1100 and maybe even before that. One would think that by now they should be able to do something to alleviate the issue. I don't recall any of my friends on other brands talking about this with their Hondas or Kawis during that same period.

I doubt this will get warranty coverage unless it's really early in the bike's life. Could the design be better, most likely... we won't know unless we examined a Honda or Kawi gear set. So let's just say certain Yamahas need to be shifted positively into second (to ensure full engagement of the dogs) and always use the clutch. A slipper clutch will not help much at all IMHO, that's only on decel. My practice is to not wildly accelerate in first, wait until second is engaged then accelerate as hard as you want. Your back tires will last longer too.

^^^ Shift quickly and positively into gear. Also, don't let your shifting foot rest and put pressure on the shift lever which keeps pressure on the shift drum and fork(s) as you ride down the road.

Sometimes the transmission won't want to shift into gear -- DO NOT -- keep banging the shifter or pressing harder; lightly feather the clutch out/in and it will go right into gear. If the transmission doesn't go into gear and you stomp/press the shift lever all you are going to do is bend the shift forks.

This thread has forced me to be more conscientious with my shifting, particularly with the 1-2 shift. I've always "pre-loaded" the shifter, a habit I was taught many years ago. And I've never been much of a squid rider, although I do enjoy running the engine up the tach every now and then. When I do that, I tend to start the run in 2nd gear anyway. I take the couple of seconds to scan the road for debris, fluid, side hazards, etc. By that time, I'm in 2nd gear.

Just a quick double check here, the service manual calls for Yamabond 1215. They don't make that any longer. I thought I read that Yamabond #4 was the replacement. Can anyone confirm that?

The Yamabond is a liquid gasket maker, shouldn't dry AFAIK or will dry very slowly..... however, no harm in using good old RTV gasket maker, which doesn't firm up too quick so you have a lot of open time. I used the red high temp stuff between engine cases of the dirt bike (there are no gaskets there).... 'cuz you can see the squeeze-out and clean it off (after it sets up a bit is best). Once your case halves are assembled, you're good to go next day.

The Honda V65's of that era had some 2nd gear issues as well.
