Yamaha FJR-specific Tank Bag

Post by bill lumberg »

Scored a deal on the Yamaha fjr branded tank bag recently, and tried it out on a trip with the wife. Pretty sweet.

I typically use Givi tanklock bags, primarily when doing distance (eating and accessing other things while at speed) or when traveling with the wife (need all the storage I can get). But all the tanklock bags I’ve tried impact the bars at lock, even after adjusting the mount and drilling new holes to move the bags back. And the larger ones can “droop” and contact the tank, defeating the purpose of using tanklock in the first place.

The fjr bag is spacious, almost cavernous. But because it’s made specifically for this bike, I can’t feel it or see it when I’m riding. It disappears. Bars touch at lock, but barely. No pressing buttons, no impact on full lock turning.

Fueling is even easier than with the tanklock bags. Only downside is having to mask the tank to keep the base from scratching the paint. Used painters tape this week. Seemed to work okay. I’d like something a little more durable, but at 5 minutes to apply and 30 seconds to remove, the tape works fine. If I could find a reasonably priced more durable paint protection product, I’d likely run this bag full time.

I might have some paint protection film. I used it on my tank where my jacket hits the tank. I had a roll of it. If I still have it and it's still good, I'll cut you a piece and you can try it. Let me check and report back.

Edit : That was easy. Walked right to it. Still have it. It's Oraguard, which is a 3M competitor. Goes on a little hazy but will go clear after sitting in the sun over time.

PM me your mailing address and how much you want and I'll send it out this week.

Congrats on scoring the FJR tankbag. Covid will soon be history and you won't have to mask the tank anymore.

I also have the Yamaha FJR tank bag (though not used since I got a top box).

To prevent scratching, I would tape round the bag's base onto the cleaned tank with cheap duct tape. This prevents dirt from getting underneath it, it also stops the bag from moving at all. Before I did this, it could move sideways in crosswinds as well as when accessing it. During a trip the straps would tend to loosen a bit, making things worse. The taping eliminates this.

I used black tape, made it less obvious round the black of the bag.

I have one of the original Yamaha FJR tank bags. It's enormous, but sits on the bike perfectly.

And are these available somewhere? My Rapid Transit tank bag is really long in the tooth - IIRC, I got it just before EOM 2008. I've been looking for a replacement for a while and haven't found one I like. Even the Iron Pony hasn't had diddly squat for quite a while now.

Mine appears to be a slightly updated version. I quite like it. A little longer and a little lower than extrememarine’s version.

I suppose my most positive thoughts are that it’s big enough to hold a lot, but I forget it’s even on the bike when I’m riding.

It is a massively huge bag, but doesn’t hinder the rider. Unless maybe yer doin a track day?

It went with my 04. Had it from 2005-2015.

However, I have lost many things in that magic hat that only my wife could find…smh.

I’m going to put it back on and take some photos later this week. They (the current version) are still available for online purchase through Yamaha. I haven’t checked other vendors.

I have used the Yammie tank bag for most of my 600,000+ miles. Only negatives are the scratches (I never did the tape thing), and it keeps you from moving around while riding aggressively in the twisties. I've gone to the SWMotech tank bags that stay off the tank. I am not completely impressed by them.

Which reminds me. Somewhere a long the way I lost the waterproof cover for my Yammie tank bag. Anybody got an extra lying around they don't need? I still use the Yammie tank bag on my '09 FJR in Germany.

I use the SW Motec bag.
Used it on a 7000km trip and it worked well for me.

Thanks for the review on the tank bag. I have been thinking about getting one for my west coast trip next year and was leaning towards the Givi that locks on the tank. Now you have me thinking more about what to get. :)

Here is a part number I found for the Yamaha bag:
1MC-F41E0-V0-00

Here is the link for it on Yamaha's site:

Is the shape of the gas tank the same between Gen 2 and Gen 3? I ask because when you select the FJR's year in the link Steel_Gin posted, it shows 2013 - 2016 as the choices.
