Twisted Texas

Post by bill lumberg »

In the spirit of “Gixxer Jasen Goes To California”, albeit shorter and slower, I plan on sneaking over to Texas this weekend.

The last time I was there on a motorcycle was for a BBG,
Jerky, and a photo op with GixxerJasen at Buccee’s.

This time will be considerably more sedate. I plan to leave Friday, cover just over 1,000 miles, and arrive in NW Texas. The next day will be for riding the Twisted Sisters. Then, a luxurious 1,000 mile return on Sunday. Knock on wood, weather looks to be superb.

Have fun.

Climb Enchanted Rock if you feel the need to stretch your legs. Hell, you could just run up it.😀

I'm highly suspicious of the "Slower" part because not many are slower than I am, but still, enjoy yourself. I'd tell you to ping me as you ride through and I'd burn some miles with you but I'm missing this beautiful season apparently with an elbow injury that doesn't want to heal. Still, if you are at a local Bucees or something, let me know and I'll see if I can sneak out.

I plan on leaving North Georgia about 0400 Friday. About 1100 miles, probsbly rolling into Kerrville, TX around 5pm local time. Sisters are a brief ride. I’m intentionally leaving that day open to wandering and sightseeing, as it is bracketed by longer days.

Late breaking word on the skreets says I have at least a chance of riding some with the venerable NTXFJR Saturday. Fingers crossed.

All that is dependent upon me escaping Georgia without hitting a deer. :)

I liked Fredericksburg better than Kerrville. 30 minutes difference. German restaurants and a main street you can walk and shake the road off.

If your set on Kerrville and want a taste of Texas check out. YO Ranch Hotel.

Best of luck, sir. We holed up in Kerrville on our 50CC, and our next morning's riding in the Texas Hill Country was superb.

The Sisters are not an all-day event. I'll recommend the Caverns of Sonora, about an hour and a half from the NW corner of the Sisters.

In order of ease/distance of integrating into the Sisters:

Lost Maples - not their best year...

Enchanted Rock

Pedernales Falls

Less scenic, but closer than Enchanted Rock and Pedernales Falls:

Devil's Sinkhole

Garner State Park

If you get a chance, while many other restaurants are rated higher by the BBQ know-it-alls, I'd recommend "The Salt Lick BBQ" to hit once. It's not hoity toity where they create demand by not making enough to last through the day and you don't need to be in line at 8am for lunch, but walking in and basking in the greatness of a real indoor open pit BBQ with all the meat hanging around getting cooked is a sight to behold. Go google the restaurant name and hit the "Images" tab in google for reference.

I plan on taking it easy Saturday. I will probably have dinner at the Branding Iron at the Y.O. that night. Thanks to all for the tips. I’m still trying to talk jwilly into a Keys run sometime over the next few weeks.

Count me as someone who also prefers Fredricksburg over Kerville.

Yeah, the triangle is only a bit of a day. Lots left over but watch out. Last time I was there a lot of extra critters out and about so anything slow enough to be safe was boring and anything fast enough to be fun was unsafe (including deteriorating road surfaces). I have long-since forsaken Lime Creek Rd because it got too bad like that.

When in glorious, downtown Hico, be sure to check out the Koffee Kup Family Restaurant. Best pies EVAH!

I'd go with "crazy" - JSNS

Was wondering if the color at Lost Maples would be nice - timing should be right. Climbing walk at Enchanted Rock is worth it, IMO.

Thanks Pants. And thanks as well to Natehawk,
gixxerjasen, and jwilly for them making sure I knew they were looking out for me as well.

I’m enjoying a dinner of elk jerky (Buc-ees), and apple, with a big bottle of Evian and some Tennessee (shampoo) on the side.

It was a long day. A lot of hours in the cold. But just as I got near my stopping point for the day, the country turned from flat to flat interesting. I got to start my day under a lunar eclipse, and end it with jerky and whisky. I do not deserve my life.

To repeat a quote I shared early this morning:

“My life is dope. I do dope shit.”

Dinner at the Branding Iron at the YO, per Dan’s recommendation. Food was superb. Service was world class. If I had it to do over, I’d have stayed at the YO.

It would have doubled or tripled my outlay, but for the 30 or 40 minutes I spent there, I felt like John Dutton. I’m back in my third world hotel. It’s not that bad. Okay, it is. It really is. Quiet, though. Not hard to sleep.

Upside of the branding iron- steaks start around $40. I show up and they have a Vegas-level prime rib buffet for $20. I wanted a steak but that was too good to pass up. Downside is- she gave me a senior discount. I will enjoy the $2, but I’m over a decade and a half short of 65.

Maybe it was a “you look like you rode 1,000 miles in the cold yesterday, and have been living off apples and clif bars and jerky like some latent-carnivorous hippie for days” discount. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
