Intredasting Part Failure

Post by bill lumberg »

The screw covers for the windshield both failed. Not a critical part, but a not a cheap pair of parts to replace either ($120 for the pair).

When I originally got the 2018 home from buying it, I swapped the original comedy shield to the Yamaha touring screen (or maybe it was the vstream 20308). A corner of one of the cover tabs was broken but still in the “clip”. I changed shields probably four more times since then without further degradation.

Today, I removed the covers to swap shields and both covers had failed. One was broken clean with the face of the cover, and the other tab was broken in half. When I removed the cover screws both metal clips fell free to the floor.

Luckily, (since this was never a problem with my 2014), I have a set of (painted) flat black covers left over from my 2014. They’ll do fine until I can order color matching replacements.

No impact was evident. I’ve never overtightened them. A curious problem after so much heavy use out of the ones from the 2014 without issue.

Sorry man.

I think you just intimidated those parts until they failed from fatigue. You need to not be so intimidating.

Yeah, you ain't the only one... mine were OK, but I have fixed and reinforced others with Permatex plastic epoxy. Maybe worth a little preventative fix....

Slow down and shit will stop flying off.. And then i can keep up too. Keep the parts and maybe we can use some JB Weld and fix em up. We fixed one on Oface's bike in the parking lot of the hotel while in Cali.

I’d be more than happy to swear under oath that having watched you ride for many, many miles, there is no way in hell you could be speeding through those curves. -0face

The ones I fixed had the whole tab broken off at the base where it joins the main part.

I think that a small piece of aluminum or steel with a 90 degree bend in it, and a hole on one leg might be a good thing to have under the seat for emergency roadside repairs..
