ReIntroduction

Post by Atrious »

Hello all,

I labeled this a re-introduction because I have been on the forum for quite some time and even met a few of you on a tech day in 2018(?). Jeff was nice enough to allow a friend of mine and I to tag along. At the time I was riding a FZ6R, which was not loved by the group. It was a great bike in my opinion, a lot better of a starter bike than the little 300s. But I digress. I just purchased a 2009 FJR 1300 with 40,000 miles and clean. The price was great at $4100. But even better then that was the previous (first) owner got to ride it until he was 90 years old! I did not get to meet the near legend as he is unfortunately battling his old age in a nursing home. Getting to ride an FJR in my 80s I would consider a great last chapter in my book! His daughter (who sold me the bike) told me that he would not move to Florida with her because the roads were too flat and too straight. :D

I wanted to make tech day this weekend in Ohio but just could not fit it in the schedule with the family, unfortunately. I was able to have a miniature tech day of my own and change the oil and flush the front brake clutch fluid and rear gear oil. I'm not sure if it is the ABS model as I cannot tell if the sensor is just the speed sensor or an ABS sensor. If someone can let me know how to tell, I would appreciate it.

There is a ticking that I hear.. a little at idle and at some certain RPMs I think I hear it more. A valve check might smart as I do not know if it was done at 25,000. The bike sat since spring of 2018. New brakes and fork seals came with the bike. The front seems soft in my opinion, not sure if this is normal for the bike or not so the seals might be needed.

I have only gotten to ride it back and forth to work as I only bought it Tuesday. A ride to St. Clairsville Ohio is planned with a friend of mine Tuesday. Its from Pittsburgh if anyone wants to tag along. We will probably hit some back roads and Jonathan, my buddy, wants to check out the Indian dealership and test out a couple of Springfields.

I have been checking out the Forum and can't wait to farkle up my ride and learn from all of you veterans.

Welcome Atrious.... lemme help you spend some money...... the FJR's were all ABS from 2006 onward. There is a sensor on each wheel. The suspension is a bit on the soft side, so you would benefit from some proper fork springs. If the seals are not leaking, you don't need any, however, at 40k you're kinda due for bushings and seals. Talk to Jeff about the next tech day.... most likely in May/June in NY.
We can talk options on the rear shock replacement later.
Try to locate the source of the ticking... one thing it very likely won't be is valves, the clearances get smaller not bigger. If you cannot pin the ticking down to a location other than under the tank somewhere, it is most likely injector tick which can come and go... since it perhaps hasn't been run continuously, run some Seafoam in it for the next few tankfuls and see if it goes away. IF it's a rattle on the right side of the engine, then you may have a cam chain tensioner issue... if you're under the tank check if the tensioner has a paint dot on it..... let us know.

Paul,

If the ticking is caused by the Cam Chain Tensioner, there are procedures written up here and on other FJR forums to replace the CCT. If you have a blue-dot or green-dot CCT, you should be okay, but an old "no-dot" CCT should be replaced, anyway. Click the link for pix of the CCT and its' location on the engine. Use a strong flashlight.

Welcome!! I think we met at the tech day you came to in '18. That FZ6R was probably liked a little more than was lead on, busting chops is what we do 2nd best. Riding is 1st.

I think it's Jeff's turn to bring the sheep so you can be indoctrinated properly. :D

The fuel injectors tick and it's normal. It is highly likely this is what you are hearing. It isn't rare for the plug wire to get pulled out from the spiral hook in the plug cap, this can also make a ticking noise. With an '09 these two things are about the only thing that will tick. Different engine speeds will move in and out of harmonics with the injectors so it will seem to come and go. In any case what you are hearing isn't a problem, ride on :)
