ABS light flashed...

Post by Hack »

Out toolin' around today.... At one point my ABS light starts to blink at me.

Blinked for a few minutes as I rode along.... Tapped my brake pedal.... Taped my brake lever.... Kept blinkin'.
This went on for about five minutes...
Then it stopped and remained "out" for the rest of my ride...
Do I need to go buy a new FJR or does the hive think I can salvage this one..?

I had a very similar issue and problem at one point just like that. I chased everything the board suggested.

Clean the ABS sensors
Re-wire some accessories to the fuse block
Clean brake switches and levers
Look for electrical back feeds

It drove nuts. Nothing seemed to work

If I got it to go off, it would come right back after 5 min.

I could get it to go off if snapped both the front and rear break on for a second. And it would come back for no reason

And then it went away after cleaning up some wiring associated with my PIAA horn that was installed before me. I think we figured it was back feeding into the LEDs or something. If you have added some accessories lately, start there. I could be totally wrong, but my issue showed up soon after I put some big LED on mine. Good luck.
I often have found myself when I was not looking, nor did that discovery take place where I thought it would!

It's usually due to the rear brake pedal not returning freely. Try lubricating the lever's pivot.

All of the above...... meanwhile, if going for cheap, might look good in my garage.
My '14 had a persistent one too (after I sold it of course). Would fix itself after an ignition cycle, but not completely. Fer fun replaced the rear sensor since I had a brand new one kicking around. Old one was fine AFAIK but the problem went away. Connectors are waterproof but might not hurt to unplug and replug to refresh the connections?

He usually rolls in around 8:30 a.m. or so, brings an extra large, double cupped, we pour half into the extra cup, then add some fine spirits. Kinda kickstarts the day. Sometimes he brings two extra larges, double cupped, then I know his list has shit on it he forgot to tell me about. Last time he didn't even spill any.

When my 2013 was about a year old I got the flashing ABS light. I could just jab on the rear brake pedal and it would go off. I was going to have a dealer check it but it only did it a few times and stopped. In the last few years it has never done it again.

Might have just been a sticky pedal that freed itself.

The ABS system has a self-diagnostic mode that displays error codes.

Remove the front cowling inner panel and right upper inner panel to access the ABS test coupler. Remove the protective cap from the ABS test coupler and connect the test coupler. Alternatively, jumper the Sky Blue wire to the Black/White wire.

Image

Turn the key switch to ON, and check the right side milti-function meter at the bottom for codes. ABS diagnostics will read stored ABS diagnostic codes and display them as ABS_xx (some two digit code such as ABS_16).

Image

Let us know what code(s) you read and post them, then myself or anybody with a FSM can tell you what the codes mean.

The FSM says:
If no fault code is displayed, make sure that the customer understands the possible conditions that may cause the ABS warning light to come on or flash even if the system is normal.

Mine has done the same thing for about a year now, usually will go off after giving the brakes one quick jab. Was hoping this brake switch recall fixed my issue. I have tried pulling up on the rear brake switch with my toe but that has never made it go off.

As a start, I would try the inexpensive, clean and lube rear brake linkage. I had an 04 that did that...drove me bonkers.
