Motech Mirror Extenders

Post by bill lumberg »

Some time last year, I was moving along in traffic on the highway. A car to my right was moving faster, and a city car running radar pulled out behind us. I knew, logically, that the officer was coming up to pull the car over, but once he got in my blind spot, I had no idea if he was behind me running lights only. It made me
realize just how big my blind spot is/was, and how much I have to contort to see behind me.

After circling the drain for most of a year, and seriously considering fz1 mirrors, I ordered a set of the sw motech mirror extenders.

Installation took less than 30 minutes, and could easily have been done in half that time. I installed, torqued to spec, rode a few miles at high rpms, and torqued again.

The view is definitely much improved. More time will be needed to see if they are the end-all be-all, or if I’ll try fz1 mirrors later on.

Bill, I had the motech extenders and they worked, somewhat. I went from seeing my chest blade to seeing my shoulders with those. I had gotten the fz1 mirrors and wow! I don't even see me anymore. And I love the fact that they fold up flush to the Vstream windshield when bike is parked and covered. I saved my original mirrors, but they are not going back on any time soon. Being that the new lollipop mirrors are black, they blend right in and aren't really noticeable. they would go good with your blue and black bike.

I also have the SW version. Also had the FZ-1 Versión on the 04. While the FZ-1 mirrors stuck way out and completely showed the triangle behind me, I just don’t seem to be missing them. Maybe my shoulders are not as wide as some of you alls. We have found that if I get into the “proper yoda” seating position, it really never matters because my elbows are tucked in. There is no wrong answer on these if they work for you. SW or FZ, YMMV. Glad you found something that works.

I agree with Cav47. I ride with elbows tucked somewhat and I am not a small person. With proper adjustment of the stock mirrors. I don't just see elbows, forearms or shoulders. Can't say it couldn't be better, but I certainly don't feel blind with the stock setup. The only time I feel limited is when I am camping and have a bunch of stuff in the dry bag on the rear seat.

As cav notes, they get it done. I rode all day today. I could see behind me normally, like I can with other bikes and and cars.

Kind of like a custom seat, you don’t think about how cushy the seat is all day. You can just ride all day and never think about the seat.

Very pleased. I had worried about the install, and it was laughably easy.

I also have the SW mirror extenders and can also say they work. They are not perfect for me, my shoulders still take up at least half of the mirrors but they made the bike a LOT safer to ride.

Since mine were a Gift from a friend I am grateful to have them.

I can still see a tiny bit of elbow. But man is it nice to know exactly what’s behind you, even right behind you, at a glance with these installed. And I sure couldn’t before. I like to focus on what’s in front of me. But if you’ve, hypothetically speaking, just passed a patrol car or passed slow mountain traffic in maverick-and-goose topgun style, it’s nice to be able to quickly check what’s going on with your buddies and what’s going on behind you.

I'm using the mirror extenders and have also added some of the little mini convex angled mirrors in the corners of each mirror to give me more visibility. For me that's the perfect combo.

I think these are the ones I'm using. It's been a while, so they might not be, but they are very similar.

Here's another link that I came across. Some interesting options here. But they might not fit the FJR mirrors well.

I installed the Motech Mirror Extenders that came with the bike (they were not installed). I got some color matched paint from Colorite for my 2014A and painted the extenders prior to installing them. I don't seem to be able to post the photos as I don't have them saved as URLs. Oh well, try to imagine the extenders painted to match the red color of the mirrors. :x

I had the FZ-1 mirrors on mine until I put the Clearwaters on. The mounting bolts on the FZ-1s are ~1/4 inch shorter than the ones on the Gen III stock mirrors and wouldn't work with the Clearwater brackets. See really good ahead or see good behind? Stock mirrors back on.

I've eyed the Motech extenders for some time. Unless I can quit riding some and get out in the shop and machine something up to make the FZ-1 mirrors work I may just breakdown and buy the Motechs based on the reviews here.

+1 for another positive experience on the Motech Mirror Extenders. They were a very justifiable safety expense. I recommend them to any FJR rider. Mine are on a 2016.

They look great and everything I ever bought from SW-Motech has been excellent quality but I swear by these little stick ons. As wide angle as you can get and takes away the blind spot.
