LOL, when is that going to happen? 11 years of riding all year long and in lots of rain and the bike is still Black Cherry (with a tinge of dirt).

Rust is just oxidation of the base metal, correct?? Copper oxidizes just as other metals. Tell me where I missed something, oh high master.

I sure hope our mutual friend spklbuk gets involved in this foolishness...

Okay, MY definition of "rust" as expressed by Merriam Webster:

"the reddish brittle coating formed on iron especially when chemically attacked by moist air and composed essentially of hydrated ferric oxide"

I was copying that in anticipation of Really Hammering you...

But then I read a little farther down and found this foolishness:

"a comparable coating produced on a metal other than iron by corrosion"

I confess that I have never heard the term "rust" applied to any metal besides iron or steel and producing a RUST color. I say copper can corrode, it can oxidize but not RUST. Merriam Webster says differently so I will back away quietly. Dammit.

I understand that rust is not the usual term for describing that process on copper...I also understand that my tongue was firmly in my cheek when I warned that using a copper washer was going to rust and put green oxidation all over his purdy red bike.

At least we all know that the final drive drain bolt just needs to be finger tight

Wheaton, regardless of where your damned tongue was I have no problem admitting it when you are right and I am wrong.

Since it happens so infrequently anyway...
