Went for a short ride to Marietta, PA today for a cup of chili at Shank's Tavern the oldest continuously operating tavern in Lancaster County, PA. Open since 1814 it was picked for a stop as part of a list on Facebook for long distance riders as a RTE stop. If you're on FB check it out and sign up. Lots of locations in every state and we all know everybody here likes to eat. You get 1 point for a pic of your bike at the venue and a second point for a pic of either your food or some form of interaction with folks inside the restaurant. Day 658 consecutive ride of 10 miles or more.

Cleaned the windshield off yesterday...left it in the garage today, freezing rain and slick roads this morning. :(

Home safe last night after 3 days and 1000 miles of surprisingly good riding. I had a nice weekend on the bike.

Managed to squeeze a 35 mile ride in between rain storms today. Thunder and lightening this evening and back to snow tomorrow.

I'll never forget the time that Josh and I met in Arkansas after he got a TPMS on his bike. We took off and ran up Push Mountain, and of course we rode it like it should be ridden. A mile or so off the road, we stopped at this roadside park to let the adrenaline settle a little bit. Josh pulls out his phone with the TPMS app and tells me that he thinks we got the tires warmed up. He had like 58 psi on his rear tire!!

One of the neat things about the FOBO monitors ( I would think other models as well ) was that I could set an alarm regarding pressure on the higher side as well as the lower. I used the higher alarm to let me know that the tires were warmed up. I am not going to pretend to know the formula for Standard Temp and Pressure, but I do know enough to understand that my Shikos are a little harder to warm up. But after the pressure alarm went off, it was like a green flag let the tires go.

One of our other riding buddies made the mistake of leaving his house on a really cold morning and trying to navigate a round about too quickly. Low sides suck.

Over pressure, under pressure, and high temp alert are all reasons I use fobo.

Rode 490 miles today from Home to just South of Wilmington, NC for my Uncles funeral tomorrow. Mostly uneventful ride other than a flat rear tire about 90 miles into the ride. Got it plugged and aired up enough to get to a gas station. GSP was nice and pulled up behind me to make sure someone didn't hit me, still unnerving having a LEO with lights going..

I got a good laugh, sitting on the ground behind the bike plugging my tire, it's 36 degrees so I kept my helmet on for warmth and the song "Baby got Back" comes on..

I’d ride just below freezing and leave my helmet on when arriving at training areas- I wouldn’t take it off until I had to, like you, for music and warmth.

I left my FJR sitting in the garage this morning. I’m on the way to SC to pick up a HD Fat Boy from my son, who is soon to deploy to a sandy place. He wanted his bike with my bike, where it will be ridden occasionally, and cared for properly. Two hours in the 30’s with no shield, no wind protection and no heated gear will be interesting. Someone pointed out that I have a truck and a trailer. But where’s the fun in that?

Bill,

I use a plan, to ride in the cold. Wear what you have for the cold, then add your rain gear as a top layer. It's the wind, not the cold, that frosts you. Rain gear cuts the wind. A neck gaiter is vital, because of all of the blood vessels in the neck. Once the blood gets cold there, then you are completely cold. Use a neck scarf only as a last resort when riding, and only if you can secure the ends with enough safety pins. I have used heavy plastic bags, punched over the hand grips, as temporary handlebar mitts to help protect the hands/gloves against the cold wind. Cold is relentless.

Plan B: rent a low bike trailer.

I hear what yer sayin, but for me....it's the moisture that gets me. When I rode in October of 2009 down to Hooterville in AR...it was 37 degrees and 6" of rain falling areawide. After having that experience, I went from a two piece rainsuit to a one piece with a hood.

Does the HD not put out enough juice for heated gear? Surely you could hit a cycle gear on the way. Lord knows you could have had one shipped from Amazon with a few days notice. It can't be more than 10 minutes to install a pig tail on the hog.

Speaking of heated gear, I just repaired the liner connection that plugs into the controller.

Otherwise, the old red girl sits in the shop while it rains on us. Tomorrow is another day....
