wheatonFJR wrote: Fri Dec 21, 2018 11:59 am Kevin, with my shock at 45K miles now, I'm thinking of getting it replaced. I was thinking of doing Traxxion...but for the $328, the stock shock...which actually does reasonably well, sounds like the right way to go. Mebbe I will just replace the fork springs and change the fluid as well!

Thanks for sharing, I think you just saved me a shit ton of $$, mebbe with the money saved I can come out and visit Montana.
Mark, as I'm certain you are aware, the Gen 3 shock comes with a stiffer spring then Gen 1 or 2. The Gen 3 shock we put into Festar's bike made a bit of difference, he could run on the soft setting even when loaded. As I recall the 15 and later shocks have an even stiffer spring set.

When we were looking for a rear shock to get Festar back on the road the 15 and 16 shocks were less expensive than the 13 as I recall.

The part number (1MC-22210-10-00) for the 13 is the same on the 14 and 15 as is the price ($327.xx) In 16 the part number changed to 1MC-22210-50-00 and the price went to $373.xx. The shocks look identical on the parts diagram. This is info from the Partzilla website.

My shock arrived at 3:00 today. It took about 15 minutes to install. I was surprised to see that the control panel assembly came with the shock. I assumed it would not and had my old one uninstalled and cleaned up.

Very interesting... a year or so ago, the '16 shock was $327 and the '13-'15 was $375-ish. IMHO, either one works on the bike functionally.

Just turned 50K and my shock is starting to get long in the tooth. Thinking about options, including how long I'm actually going to keep the bike.

You still have 100k left in that bike...unless you are thinking of less touring and a lighter mountain riding bike. I considered that once...but then I was thinking how much fun I have on the FJR in the mountains...and I ain't quitting touring...so it didn't seem worth it. Course I've never been a multi bike guy.

You getting a new bike?

Pants, get an aftermarket shock, keep the stocker for when you sell it off. You can move the aftermarket to the new FJR you're pining for, or sell it if necessary..... I mean, for what you paid for it minus some "user fee/depreciation. I mean, if you're gonna spend 325 on a new shock, list price minus 325 = fair market value for an aftermarket... or pick up a used aftermarket and refresh it......

That reminds me. I need to order a filter and a gallon of 10w40. Next weekend will be the 4K mile change. I ordered a right passenger foot peg to facilitate swapping to the Garauld hydration system I have on order. #summerdistance.

Oh, and I'm looking at my FJR as I sit in the garage enjoying a nice cigar and a glass of some very nice Bourbon.

Put about 50 miles on quick this morning. Rode past the house where I grew up just to reminisce. Sun is shining and temps around 40. Day 645 consecutive and forecasts look moderate through end of year.for my first full calendar year. Can I make 2 full years?

Since I am doing a minor refresh on my 13, I serviced all the caliper pins today. They were all in good shape, came out without drama, cleaned easily with steel wool and have copper anti-seize on the threads and silicon grease on the tapered ends.

Ordered a Garauld hydration kit and spare RR peg for quick change out for it. The difficulty of quickly filling a camelback at some stations caused me to stop refilling mine on my Tejas BBG (fountain ice dispenser clearances vary widely). I think, on a distance run, it’ll take much less time to dump a bag of ice once in a while than fiddling with one of my camelbacks at every fuel stop.

After doing Christmas stuff with the kids and the Grand-kids for the past several days today was time for some 2 wheel therapy.

Left home early this morning to drop the gift off to my 2yo Twin Grand-kids, was 29 on the way to their house.

Image

After putting their mini trampoline together i headed to the mountains. As I headed up through North GA I thought "I have never ridden the Dragon on Christmas, might be fun"

Image

Image

As i made my first pass through the Dragon I passed a Honda Side by Side ATV all decorated up. As I came by i thought i recognized the guy driving it. Sure enough it was our old FJR buddy Fubar and his wife Christine! We had a great chat at the overlook before parting ways.

After the Dragon I ran back across the Skyway, lots of snow up in the elevation. Road was pretty clear other than a few spots where the Jeeps had made a mess. Great day of riding, even the LEO just outside of Ducktown was in the Christmas Spirit and smiled when i offered him a candy cane that Don's wife gave me... 395 miles and no performance awards!

I’d be more than happy to swear under oath that having watched you ride for many, many miles, there is no way in hell you could be speeding through those curves. -0face
