Today, I installed my replacement YAMAHA bag emblem. And I ordered real-time industries reflectives for the bags. May get all crazy and add an IBA decal to the real-time vinyl since it’s removable. Living on the edge.

Is that legal, putting an IBA sticker on a bike that's never done an IBA sanctioned event? Seems pretty cheesy to me .

Rode it to work, again. Day 638 consecutive ride. Both days of weekend sucked for riding but I stuck it out and got my miles in Rode in the rain both days but temps stayed above freezing so it was tolerable. This morning roads were still damp in spots but mostly dry and temps near 40. Must say I've been pretty blessed where the weather is concerned.

Rode it to work. A tad chilly at 48F this morning. 57F on the way home with patchy sun. Probably my last ride of the year, unless I ride in on the 31st.

I rode my FJR in North Carolina,Tennessee, and Georgia today. Went up my own private Cherohala up to the lake far above the Ocoee River. While I am not fond of them, the original equipment tires are holding up better than I would have guessed, particularly with the alpine spankings they’ve been getting.

My 2014 started cranking a little slower. A new battery at two years fixed it right up. It was still cranking great 40,000 plus miles later.

Well, I rode about 825 miles in two days, but the weather ran us back home last night. This time of year, a big change in the forecast is always to be expected. We mostly poked around central Louisiana and East Texas on some familiar, but good riding roads. I had fun, but it really didn't scratch my itch.

Well..... the FJR likes a robust battery, and I've read a lot of forum talk over the years.... most have not edumacated themselves on how batteries actually discharge and start to deteriorate..... others spread fear of leaving them on a charger..... hooey, I say. I plug mine in to the Battery Tender whenever it's gonna sit more than 5 days. Keeps it from going into sulphation territory (remember it is half discharged when down to 12.5V), and I've never had a problem with a Battery Tender in 11 years (I have 4 of them). I have the OEM out of my '07 (I had abused that battery a few times before I got smarter), and it has been sitting on my shelf not connected to any draws for 5 years while mostly hooked up to a Tender. It still has a full charge, although I would not vouch for its long term serviceability. I have other batteries (non Yuasa) donated to me that didn't make the cut and will no longer charge (they were mostly pooched when I got them). Does not surprise me at all an OEM lasts, and any decent battery should last 5 years if taken care of properly. Note the OEM is a different construction than the aftermarket replacements, and of course more $$.

New front brake pads yesterday. The linked brakes on the right front caliper were barely touched, so I let them ride.

Speed bleeders in route and I'll do a brake/clutch flush soon. Flipped 50K on Monday, so 2nd valve check, coolant flush, new spark plugs, and a T/B sync is just around the corner....

Guess I'll keep this one a while longer...

Had mine parked on the lift hoping to get at the winter maintenance/farkle cleanup list.. took it off, rolled the project bike rolling chassis up there... gotta get on with it.

Well, since none of you reprobates bought my bike I decided to give it a minor refresh. Step one is to replace the rear shock. The old one is still in good shape but with nearly 45,000 miles on it, and a new OE shock selling for $328 with free shipping I figured why ride on the last 30-40% of the shock's life. New shock gets delivered today. While waiting I cleaned and lubed the rear suspension linkage. It still looked well lubed and fairly clean since I last did it 25K miles ago. I use a mixture of Wurth SIG 3000 grease and a moly. The Wurth is the stickiest stuff known to mankind and is a high pressure and water proof grease. I add about 20% moly just because. The mixture seems to have a very long life. Flushed rear brakes and clutch while waiting for the shock. The clutch fluid looked very clean but the bottom of the reservoir had a dark film on it. I removed the film with a Q-tip before removing the old fluid and sucked out the resulting mess with a turkey baster. I added fresh fluid and sucked it out again and repeated this until all signs of the film were gone; then flushed as normal. Also on the list are new tires, inspecting the front forks to see how they are holding up and add fresh fluid, and then do the normal routine maintenance stuff.

Doing the shock replacement on the floor because I did not want to tie-up the lift while waiting for the shock.

Partzilla had the best price of the 3-4 sources I checked. Others were in the $350-360 range and Partzilla was the only supplier offering free shipping. Others wanted as much as $40 for shipping.
