i have the system 3 on my 2003 fjr and this july while i was driving on the french toll motorway an alarming thing happened,we (2 fjrs and 1 kawasaki) had just paid our tolls and pulled over to the hard shoulder to put wallets away and stretch legs,we switched engines off, when we came to restart my fjr and my mates kawasaki wouldnt start, the alarms kept going off and the engine disablers wouldnt switch off.i remembered a story in the motor cycle news about this,a reader had the same problem but i couldnt remember the fix but did remember about radio towers, looking around there alongside the toll booths was a tower, now these towers broadcast on a wide range of frequencies and one of these is the alarm fob frequency, our solution was to push the bikes a quater mile till they started.rang datatool when i got home but there is no fix for it apart from entering a code that can then be accessed by switching the ignition on and off the required amount of times per number.my other mates fjr had no alarm fitted,2002 model.antbody else had this problem?.

So I actually got this top box back in June, but finally getting around to posting some pictures. I opted for the new black design.

I got the box from Premier Motorcycle Accessories, along with their mounting plate & Admore lighting.

I bought it so I could use the bike for work. I have to carry a bunch of files around with me, so condensed them down, and bought a hanger rack designed for inside a filing cabinet. It works out that there is even room for my cooler. One of my side boxes I have the bag with more paperwork, & a portable printer. The other side I keep for rain gear. And I use the bottom part of my tank bag I keep a clipboard with easy access to my daily time-sheet.

The install was easy, as I had previously been using Premier Cycles rear backrest, with additional parts needed for the 2005 and older. So had already got the mounting holes for the rack there. The only problem I had, was that I have been unable to detach the backrest from the small backrest holder & fix it to the new rack, as the holes are there for it. I need to drill out one of the bolts on that. But I'm leaving that for another day.

The rack

Hard to see the Admore lighting on it, but it works great, very bright & very easy to tap into the wires. They worked first try, as I found a post elsewhere with the wire colors to tap into.
Views:
Size: ">Attachment 3930The death of a 13-year-old motorcycle rider at Indianapolis Motor Speedway cast a shadow over Sunday's races at the historic track and prompted mourning competitors to defend the development system for the dangerous circuit.
Peter Lenz of Vancouver, Wash., fell off his bike during the warmup lap for the day's first race at Indianapolis and was run over by another motorcycle, driven by a 12-year-old.
Medical workers immediately placed Lenz in a neck brace, put him on a stretcher and began chest compressions while taking him to a hospital.
Several hours later, he was pronounced dead.
Lenz's father reported his son's death on his Facebook page as the county coroner confirmed the fatality.
"Peter passed away early this morning when he was apparently struck by another rider," read a posting on Lenz's Facebook page, which was signed "Dad."
"He passed doing what he loved and had his go-fast face on as he pulled onto the track," Lenz's father wrote."The world lost one of its brightest lights today. God Bless Peter and the other rider involved. #45 is on another road we can only hope to reach. Miss you kiddo."
The Marion County coroner's office said Lenz died from blunt force trauma. More details could be released Monday following an autopsy on the youngest driver or rider ever killed at the 101-year-old speedway. It was the speedway's 73rd fatality and the first since October 2003, when IndyCar driver Tony Renna was killed during a test run.
"On behalf of the Lenz family, we would like to thank Peter's friends and supporters for all their help throughout the years," the family said in a statement passed out to reporters. "We are deeply saddened by the loss but know that Peter is racing even faster in the sky."
The family said additional thoughts and messages could be posted on the Facebook page.
Lenz had emerged as one of America's youngest rising stars.
At age 11, he earned the "expert" license from the American Federation of Motorcyclists, and in March 2009, Lenz became the youngest rider ever to win an AFM race. This year, competing in the U.S. Grand Prix Racers Union series, Lenz had four wins, five podium finishes and was leading the MD250H classification in points.
The grown-up resume just didn't match his appearance. Listed at 4-foot-11 and 81 pounds, Lenz's face was clean-shaven and smooth, and he described his profession as "kid."
"Our hearts go out to the parents, family and friends of Peter Lenz," speedway CEO Jeff Belskus said in a statement. "Words cannot adequately express the sadness of our company and our employees about this tragic incident, and Peter is in our thoughts and prayers."
It wasn't the first time Lenz was involved in a serious crash.
A mechanical failure last season left Lenz with four broken bones and a severed radial nerve-all of which required surgery. By November, Lenz was healthy again and by spring, he was back in Victory Lane.
The fatal accident almost certainly will spark a debate about how young is too young for racers to be competing on one of the world's best-known tracks, whether it's inside a car or riding a motorcycle capable of exceeding 120 mph in a straightaway.
The USGPRU sanctions races across the nation, billing itself as a development circuit for motorcycle racers from ages 12 to 18. The hope is these riders eventually will compete in a world-class series.
Lenz seemed to be on his way to the top before the accident. He was struck by 12-year-old Xavier Zayat, of Flushing, N.Y., who escaped injury. Racers insist age has never been the issue.
American Colin Edwards was running 250cc bikes at age 17, and Indy MotoGP runner-up Ben Spies was competing on the 125cc circuit at age 12.
"That's not like a bike too big for him, you know, I mean this is our sport, we chose to do it," said American Nicky Hayden, the 2006 world champ who called the death "terrible."
"I mean, sure, we know going in the consequences."
But are new rules needed?
Those in racing circles say no, comparing the sport to other potentially dangerous sports such as football and gymnastics. When asked about running at Indy, speedway officials pointed out that the series has stops at potentially more dangerous tracks.
USGPRU officials said this was the first fatality in the series in nine years.
Still, racing conditions were not ideal this weekend at Indy. Hot, dry weather turned the bumpy, 2.621-mile course into a slick track that tested the world's best riders.
Reigning world champ Valentino Rossi fell four times, including a spill Sunday morning during a 20-minute warmup session. Sunday's Moto2 race was shortened after a big wreck on the first lap took out four drivers.
"This was the most difficult race for everyone," MotoGP winner Dani Pedrosa said. "The conditions were very hard because of the heat and the asphalt was very greasy."
After a brief delay to clear the track, the USGPRU race was restarted. Had they known the severity of the injuries, one official said they would have considered canceling the race. The three other races all started on time, though Lenz was never far from the racers' thoughts.
"This is an ugly, terrible part of this sport," USGPRU chief steward Stewart Aitken-Cade said. "You do what you can to stop it from happening as best you can. That's really all that you can do."
"Any time a racer is injured in this way and loses his life, it's tough, adult or child," Aitken-Cade added. "It just makes it especially difficult when it's a young guy like Peter."

Oh things are not rosy around the house! The FJR is baulking at cranking and it's supposed to be a beautiful week-end!

For a few weeks now I have had some intermented issues with starting; turn the key on, everything appears normal, hit the start button and get a clicking noise. The first time it happened my son jiggled the side stand switch and wires resulting in an immediate fire up. The next couple of times that didn't do it, but fiddling around with the plug in for the clutch safety switch got the job done. Now nothing.

I've unplugged both, cleaned and re-installed, still nothing. Instruments are fine, lights all work, when it cranks it runs fine. This has got to be something simple... Are there tests for the safety switches? How about removing them entirely, sheesh at this point that sounds like a great idea.

In the workshop now fiddling around, any ideas or help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Thoughts on 5 years of farkles and riding (mostly farkles)

Here are my thoughts on my farkles after 5 years and 42k miles on 'ol Matilda. After all that time I still love the bike and will keep her until 1 of us wears out!

1. Fork Brace - MCL. Put it on after about a year. Seemed to work well and made a positive difference. When I changed tires this last time, I didn’t put it back on just to see the difference. I like it much better without the brace. I think my skills have improved and the brace doesn’t add anything and the bike handles better without it. Quality brace by MCL.
2. D&D setback risers. Had them almost from the start and they’re great for the shoulders - I’ve never had sore shoulders. They do make the bike more apt to “fall into” a corner, but I’ve adapted to it as we human beings do. Think I’ll take them off just to see the difference.
3. $30 heated grip stick-on (Dual Stars) - I’ve had them for 5 years and they are the best 30 bucks I’ve spent on the bike! Only have a low - hi switch which works just fine for me - can’t imagine the bike without them.
4. FZ-1 mirrors. Second best $$ I’ve spent. I can see roughly 210 digress or so with each and wouldn’t change them for a ride on the vomit comet. To be frank, the mirror itself is a lower quality than the OEM mirrors, but the improvement in vision area is worth that small offset - besides, I gave my OEM mirrors away.
5. Hella FF-50s - biggest disappointment of all. Don’t provide any light farther out than hi-beams, in fact they don’t make any difference at all in that aspect, but the can be aimed to provide more light to the sides (which I do) and that makes them worthwhile, but don’t have any great expectations if you buy them.
6. BlueSea fuze panel. Great item that helped me learn more about electrical stuff, soldering, heat shrink, and relays. Works well too.
7. Spacers in the windshield to make it tilt back towards the rider. Supposedly helps with buffeting - Bullcrap (opinion). I had one fail and never replaced them. Face it, the best we can get is with the shield down or up an inch or 1.5”, after that there’s buffeting and your grape is pushed down and forward.
8. Race Tech fork springs. I learned a buttload about the bike doing this mod. Worth the time and effort for the education alone, but also provides a better ride and handling.
9. Various heat fixes. I’ve done them all, Cromeit, blankets, insulation under the gas tank, pipe insulation around the tank. I’ve removed all except the pipe insulation around the tank and the insulation stuck to the bottom of the tank. The other stuff didn’t make a whit of difference to me.
10. ESG Stator. The one farkle I wish I had never done. Hyped as the greatest thing since bras that unhook in the front, and have turned out to be a “consumeable”item. UNSAT and when my second one fails I’m done with this - expensive lesson.
11. Rick Mayer saddles: replaced both with Rick’s and am very satisfied. For me and for Lorie the stock saddles were torture after about 80 miles or so. No problems since I bought the seats 4.5 years ago and they are very high quality.
12. BMW grips - I replaced the stock grips with these and they’ve been on there for the last 40k miles. When and if they wear out I’ll buy another set.
13. Yamaha oil and oil filters - a ripoff from my local dealer and I have used Purolator filters and Delvac/Penzoil/Mobil 1/Rotella oil since I first changed the oil. Right now I have Delvac and a quart of Mobil 1 10/40 in there and I think it’s the best so far!
14. Larger windscreen. I bought a +4 +3 (I think) CeeBailey. Good investment and I use it most every winter. Larger size makes a noticeable difference (for the good) in cool/cold weather.
15. All Balls Steering bearings. Again, I learned a great deal about the bike but I can’t honestly say I noticed much of a difference.
16. Givi TopBox (46). Great investment and a solid piece of gear.
17. R&G sliders. I’ve dropped the bike on each side (both times in the garage) and the sliders worked. If I had to do it over again, I’d most likely get slides that don’t require drilling a hole in the side plastic - not a big deal and I’m not unhappy, but I’d probably not do the R&G again (I think they’re out of business anyway).
18. MCL pillion peg extenders. Good investment and a quality product. I ask Lorie to “mount” the bike using my peg so as not to risk bending the longer peg, but I, and she, loves ‘em.
19. Last (I think) and not least, the Autocom intercom. Mine is now 5 years old and at least one generation behind. I’ll say it works fine. The helmet speakers mostly suck, but work. I would like the separate rider/pax volume and vox controls that are available now. I only use it when Lorie is with me; usually just as an intercom - we will occasionally plug in the iPod for music (also works fine). If I’m alone I’ll just stick in earplugs and go direct to the iPod. I’m not sure what’s available now - oh yeah, I have hooked a radio up to the Autocom and it worked in talking to Lorie in a car behind me - but I would continue to have an intercom. It’s worth the cost to be able to talk with Lorie while riding.
20. Tires. Metzler - came with the bike, my first so they seemed fine to me. Michelon Prs - great tires, I now have the PR2 and they’re great tires --my favorites. Bridgestones - won’t ever, ever, ever, buy a Bstone tire - car or bike - again. Dunlop - good tires but wore out way to fast. Avon - great grip, but after a bit the bike “wondered” at low speed - creepy and I won’t buy them again. I think those are all of the tires I’ve tried. I like to try different stuff so if there’s a good review on a new set, I may try them.
21. Taking advice from folks on the Forum. I’ve learned there are folks who know what they’re talking about; folks who sound like they know, but are full of crap; and folks who are somewhere in between. The trick is knowing which is which! I’ve found folks whose thoughts and opinions I will always respect, some I’ll never respect, and I’m still working on the other 90% of the forum. There is a wealth of information out there but you need to consider who is saying what.

Remember, these are my thoughts and OPINIONS and not an invitation for argument, although discussion is welcome.
And to be honest I do love a good argument.

Well, the last couple of days the FJR has been acting a bit edgy. I would be rolling along, hit the turn signal and the bike would act like it was down shifting (Bike is an AE) so I thought maybe I had hit the paddle shift on accident. This happened a few times. This morning, I pulled the bike out of the garage, turned on the shifter switch and the bike died. I was able to restart with no problem and rode to work.

Well, tonight, I head home, have one of the turn signal instances happen but other than that no problems, turn the corner to come down the street to my house and the bike just dies in the turn. I pulled over, tried to restart the bike but nothing. I have my dash lights on, guages are on but other symptoms are happening like the fuel gauge flashing at me and the high beam light is on. I tried messing with the signals, headlight switch and shifter power switch but they are all non responsive. I am thinking I blew a fuse but not sure where to start. The troubleshooting area in the shop manual is crap. I pushed the bike the block and a half home and put it on the battery tender to see if maybe that had anything to do with it. It was fully charged, but it is four years old...

I did a form search but would like to hear from Gen 2 riders. I'm 6'0" tall with 31" inseam and longer upper body torso. I was thinking of a 4" taller and 2" wider CBailey reverse contour flip screen. To those on the Gen 2 who have the CBailey reverse flip screen are you happy with the results with this screen?

Thanks!

It showed up better till I knocked the dirt off

the rear still has just a hair shy of 3/32nds and the front has the same stripe with even more tread.

it circles both tires entirely. it is not even like it is a rubber compound change attach point. its on the left half of the rear and right side of the front.

In theory, they'd plug into the radar detector, and transmit to a Bluetooth device (Sena, Chatterbox, Cardo, etc).
